
Coughs, Colds and Earaches
Aconite:
This is first stages of a common cold after exposure to cold, dry winds.
Cold:
- Dripping, clear, hot fluid from the nose especially AM
- Burning throat
- Throbbing congestive headache with roaring in the ears
- Thirsty, fever, one cheek red and the other pale
- Better open air
Cough
- First remedy for croup
- Child wakens anxious with croupy sounding cough
- Cough is triggered by entering a warm room
Earache
- External ear is red, hot, painful and swollen
- Warm applications better
- Sensation of a drop of water in the left ear
Belladonna:
Cold
This remedy is indicated when the cold comes on suddenly after exposing head to cold or washing hair. On waking face is flushed, hot to the touch, pupils dilated, extremities are cold. Bright red, sore throat can be worse in the right side. Burning fever and restless. Better sitting up, worse lying down, worse motion, jarring, noise and light.
Cough
- Short, dry, frequent
- Worse at night
- Cough begins as if a speck is in the throat
- Tickling and burning in the throat with violent coughing spasms
Earache
- Sudden onset
- Worse on the right ear
- Throbbing pain deep in the ear, hearing the tempo of the heart beat
- Child cries out in sleep from pain
Bryonia:
Cold
- This remedy is indicated when the cold travels to the chest.
- Dry stuffy nose with dry lips
- Irritable, crying for something and then refuses it.
- Constipated, hard, dry stools
- Extremely thirsty
- Wants to be left alone
- Wants to be perfectly still
Better: rest, cold applications, firm pressure
Worse: light touch, eating or drinking, slightest motion
Chamomilla:
Earache
- Soarness and severe pain
- Sticking pains
- Ears feel stopped up
- Frantic from the pain- child will not be consoled
- Extremely irritable
- One cheek red and the other pale
- Thirsty
Better: Being carried, and in warm, wet weather
Worse: Night, warm applications, heat, open air, wind
Gelsemium:
Cold
- Symptoms develop slowly over several days
- Watery discharge that irritates nose
- Feels as if hot water is dripping from nostrils
- Tired, achy over whole body, extremely weak
- Droopy eyes
- Headache as a band around head, scalp sore to the touch
- Mild fever
- Lack of thirst
Cough
- Dry
Better: Profuse urination, open air
Worse: Anticipation, thinking about ailments
Nux Vomica:
Cold
- Early stages
- Sneezing spells
- Runny nose daytime and stopped up at night
- Sore Throat
- Irritable
- Chilly
- Extremely sensitive to noise and odours
Nux Vomica Con’t
Cough
- Dry
- Teasing
- Sore throat and chest
- Coughing spells end in retching
Better: Evening, lying down, warmth, uninterrupted nap
Worse: AM, cold air, open air
Hepar Sulfur
Babies are generally sweaty, cough readily, have rattled breathing. Hepar has an unusual weather indication better in damp weather and worse in cold, dry weather
Cold
- .Begins with irritation in the throat
- Nasal discharge first watery then thick and yellow
- Infection spreads from throat to ear
- Splinter sensation in the back of the throat
- Sweating with sour odor
- Peevish
Cough
- Dry, hoarse to loose rattling croupy cough
- Worse AM
- Cough when any part of the body gets cold or uncovered
- May cough up thick, yellow mucus
Earache
- Sticking pains from throat to ears on swallowing
- Wants to be wrapped up and ears covered
Anxiety
Aconite:
Acute and sudden shock causing fear, anxiousness, restlessness.
Arsenicum Album:
Anguish, aggravated, at night fear of the dark, afraid to be alone.
Gelsemium:
Fear in anticipation of something (a student performing in an exam, a performance, job related performance)
Fever
Arsenicum:
- Person is fearful and restless
- Has burning pains relieved by warmth
- Very thirsty for frequent sips of water
- There is a rapid prostration and increased weakness
- Worse after midnight
Belladonna:
- Sudden onset, flushed, hot, red face with cold extremities.
- High temperature, pulse strong and rapid.
- Little or no thirst.
- May become delirious.
Bryonia:
- Prefers to lie still
- Worse from the least movement ie. When swallowing, turning head, even moving eyes
- Very thirsty, drinks a lot of water
- Pale, quiet
Gelsemium:
- Person is chilly, chills up and down back
- Aches all over
- Does not want to move
- Dull headache
- Droopy eyes
- Heavy limbs
- Despite fever no thirst
